In each face-to-face session, a clinical case chosen by our speaker will be discussed, using images and videos, whose therapeutic plan involves a specific surgical approach. The attendees will have the chance to intervene and ask all your questions in a more dynamic and interactive way!


Each Parallel Session will be 45min with five different speakers. The session was design to give you a brief review about four different surgical areas: ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, neurosurgery and oncology. The Parallel Session themes and their respective speakers are presented below.


Speaker: João Barbosa Breda

João Barbosa Breda is a glaucoma specialist at Centro Hospitalar Universitário São João (CHUSJ) and also Invited Assistant Professor at FMUP.

He became a European Glaucoma Society (EGS) Fellow and obtained an award as 2nd best in the European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO) exam in May 2019.

He received clinical research training from Harvard Medical School and FMUP and has earned a double PhD degree at KU Leuven (Belgium) and at FMUP (Portugal) for his work on ocular blood flow in glaucoma. His current research interests focus on ocular vascular changes in glaucoma and systemic diseases, artificial intelligence and imaging.


Speaker: Laurentino Manuel Rodrigues Mendes Leal

Laurentino Leal is an otorhinolaryngology and cervico-facial pathology specialist, with laryngology as mainly focus and also Assistant Professor at FMUP.

Meanwhile he as several published articles as author and co-author in otorhinolaryngology journals.

As a specialist he worked at “Trofa Saúde”, at Boa Nova and now is working at CUF clinic.


Speaker: Bruno Miguel Fernandes de Carvalho

Bruno Miguel Fernandes de Carvalho is a neurosurgery assistant physician at Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de São João, specialist in Neuro-Oncology and Assistant at Clinical Neurosciences and Mental Health Department at FMUP.

He concluded his PhD at FMUP/IPATIMUP with the project entitled: “Characterization of angiogenesis-related molecules in glioblastoma: potential applications as biomarkers for bevacizumab-based therapy”.

Also did several trainings such as Intraoperative Ultrasound in Neurosurgery and Fluorescence-guided Surgery using Gliolan® and internship in Functional Mapping, Cortical and Subcortical Stimulation in Neuro-Oncology / Awake Brain Surgery.

Member of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) and the Associação Portuguesa de Neuro-Oncologia (APNO).


Speaker: Susy Cabral da Costa

Susy Cabral da Costa is a Consultant in General Surgery, specializing in Breast Surgery and Oncoplastic Breast Surgery. She completed her Medicine degree in 1995 at Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (ICBAS) of the University of Porto, having completed Specific Training in General Surgery at the Medical Internship at the Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de São João.

Since 2010, she has been responsible for the CHUSJ High-Risk Breast and Ovary Cancer Consultation and in recent years has been particularly dedicated to the management and treatment of breast cancer in young women.

She is also an assistant professor in the curricular units of Surgery at FMUP.


Speaker: João Capela Costa

João Capela Costa is a Graduate Assistant at the Endocrine and Cervical Surgery Unit at Centro Hospitalar e Universitário São João, Assistant Professor of Thyroid Cancer and Hyperthyroidism at FMUP, Coordinator of the Ultrasound and Biopsies Unit of General Surgery and was also Coordinator of Emergency Trauma, becoming Team Leader since 2013.

Meanwhile, he was “Differentiated Thyroid Carcinoma Treatment Guide” Co-editor of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Cirurgia (SPCir), National Coordinator of the Endocrine Surgery Chapter of SPCir and Sociedade Portuguesa de Ecografia Médica (SPEM) Co-founder.
